Rinse at a lower temperature
Just as taking a hot shower dries out your skin, washing your hair at a higher temperature can dehydrate your hair and scalp. This causes your sebaceous glands to overproduce to compensate for the lost oil. So if you start washing your hair less often and don’t notice any improvement, this is probably the cause.

Don’t worry; we won’t try to convince you to say goodbye to those long, relaxing showers, but rather offer you alternatives. This includes starting to wash your hair with warm water rather than hot water to ensure enough lather gets to your scalp. However, once you’re done washing your hair, finish with one final rinse in cool water. The warm water will open your hair cuticles and allow you to cleanse thoroughly, and then the lower temperature will close them, leaving all the benefits of your products in your hair and scalp.

Nourish your hair with a treatment
We all deserve to be treated, and your hair is no exception; in this case, you don’t need to go to an expensive salon for a de-greasing treatment, as it’s likely that everything you need is hidden in your cupboard.

While many people think the word “nourishing” is only associated with oil-filled treatments that moisturize your hair, that’s not true, not if you’re already struggling with greasy hair. Nourishing your hair and scalp can be any nutrient-rich treatment that can promote health. With this in mind, a great tip is to add a little apple cider vinegar to your roots before rinsing with warm water. This will help to eliminate oil build-up on the scalp and restore the hair’s natural pH balance. The nature of apple cider vinegar means that it is acidic enough to cleanse your hair, but gentle enough to not strip your hair of all its natural essence.

If you’ve been using stronger shampoos to try and reduce the greasiness of your scalp, you may find that the ends of your hair feel a little dry. To prevent your hair from becoming brittle and weak, we recommend using a hair mask or deep conditioner once a week. Use these treatments only on the ends of your hair, avoiding the roots to prevent product buildup. You can find a range of deep nourishing treatments and conditioners for hair extensions on our hair care page.

Use a boar bristle brush
There’s nothing better than smooth, tangle-free hair, but finding the balance of brushing is crucial. Over-brushing your hair can start to stimulate oil production, which means that while your hair looks shiny at first, within a day, it will turn greasy. However, too little brushing can cause oil to build up on your scalp, leaving the top of your head greasy and the ends dry. The key to finding the balance is to use a paddle hog-bristle brush, which allows you to draw excess oil from the scalp and distribute it evenly to the ends of your hair. Try limiting your brushing to first thing in the morning and then brushing again before bed.

This will be slightly different if you have hair extensions installed, as you don’t want to put any pressure on them. We always recommend using a soft bristle brush without any balls on the end of the bristles, as they can easily stick to your hair, especially if you have nano-ring extensions. When brushing, always start at the bottom and work your way up. For those who do not have clip-in extensions permanently attached to their hair, we recommend using the same method, as brushing too hard can cause the extensions to come loose from the weft.

Once you have purchased the proper brush, it is important to keep it clean. Every time you brush your hair, the bristles are coated with a product, whether it’s hairspray, leave-in conditioner or dry shampoo. This means you are applying excess product to the roots of your hair every time you brush. For a guide to thoroughly cleaning your hairbrush, check out Real Simple.

Take the right vitamins
The bad news is that eating too many greasy, unhealthy foods will inevitably leave you with greasy hair. So while we’re not saying you need to say goodbye to cheat days forever, we do recommend that you include anti-grease vitamins in your diet.
Foods rich in vitamin B2 and vitamin B6 are great for reducing sebum production in your body, which means your scalp will slowly start producing less oil. Fortunately, there are some delicious ingredients that are very easy to incorporate into your meals and are rich in these essential vitamins, including

Vitamin B2 Vitamin B6
Salmon Tuna
Mushrooms Bananas
Spinach Potatoes/sweet potatoes
Almonds Pistachios
Avocado Radish
Eggs Green beans
Our Greasiest Hair Update
Some days, when your hair starts to look a little greasy and dull, but it’s too early to re-wash it, putting it up in a bun is an effective way to get that ideal look! When your hair is down, you may touch it more frequently throughout the day, which means any oils you have on your hands will transfer and start to build up. So this is our greasiest head bun on those particular days!

The messy bun
This easy-to-puke hairstyle is perfect for hiding the grease in your hair and making it look tousled. Simply run your fingers through your hair and avoid using a brush as it helps add texture; you can put a thick hairband or scarf around the front of your head to hide it further!
