Fashion trends for the Oscars 2023 ceremony

Recently, red carpet denizens have begun using fashion as activism, such as when a group of actresses wore black at the 2018 Golden Globes as a statement of solidarity with the Me Too movement. Often, however, the fashion statement on the Oscars red carpet is less explicit and more implicitly a collective vibe or sign of the times. It tells people how to see themselves in real-life glamour moments.

For this year’s Academy Awards, the red carpet switched to a “champagne” hue, adding some variety to the evening. While it may or may not have been relevant, the switch to a cream carpet provided an interesting backdrop for this year’s Oscar fashion trends. Some came straight from the Paris Fashion Week shows, while others offered broader suggestions for future and current trends.

Here, a look at the top three fashion trends that walked the Oscars carpet last night and their after parties, and some insights into how we might see them pop up in real life later in the year.

The red carpet at the Oscars often glitters with gold sequins, liquid metallic wire and other sparkling champagne-colored accents designed to make the subject shine like a figurine. This look rarely includes white, as white gowns are traditionally reserved for wedding moments, not the red carpet. But at Sunday’s awards ceremony – and at numerous galas – white was the most popular hue, making the carpet look a bit like a bridal procession.

The second big fashion trend at the Oscars seemed to come straight from Paris Fashion Week and the rest of the Autumn/Winter 23 shows. Gloves – more specifically, operatic gloves that reach above the elbow – are everywhere.
