Does every celebrity you follow on Instagram seem to change their look every summer? Natural brunettes tend to add some blonde to their hair, and redheads seem to add more copper to their hair-that being said, almost everyone gets bigger and brighter during the warmer months. But how can you know exactly what color to wear this summer, or how to keep your makeup on after you leave the salon? To break down exactly what the best hair colors are for summer 2023, I chatted with several top colorists and stylists – and their answers make me want to run to the salon first thing tomorrow morning.
How to find your perfect summer hair color
When deciding how to find the best hair color for the new season, look in the mirror first. “I do think hair color all starts with your skin tone and eye color. You really want to go to a professional and ask them what works for your skin tone,” says Justin Anderson (opens in a new tab), celebrity hairstylist and founder of hair care and color brand dpHue. If you have olive undertones, Anderson suggests “more blonde or butterscotch tones” to match the natural warmth level in their skin. If you’re paler, he suggests switching to a more ashy shade.
When it comes to overall hair trends, Anderson thinks the future is bright – but he notes that it’s equally important to take care of your roots. “After the pandemic, people want to take care of their roots, and they want this summer to be nice and bright,” he says.
