Winding westwards from the main square and lined with charming shops and attractions, Ilica is one of Zagreb’s most historic streets. Respected second-hand bookshops sit alongside New Wave cafes and at least twice a year, Ilica is transformed into a huge street festival. Here are eight great places to explore and investigate!
History
Ilica first appeared in the historical record in the 1500s as a trade route for farmers and herdsmen to access the Dolac market above the main square. The vineyards extend northwards over the slope and a settlement called “Ilica”, probably from the Croatian word for “road”, ulica, emerges around it. Ilica winds through Zagreb in a way that no other street does.
