Warning: Ahead you have your major spoilers for season 4.
Everything we were led to believe in the first part of season four was a lie. The fact that Joe didn’t get Marianne (Tati Gabrielle) safely back to her daughter in Paris, that Rhys Montrose is just a guy running for mayor, and that Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley) is still Joe Goldberg.
Now you know why showrunner Sera Gamble instructed viewers to rewatch the scenes between Joe and Rhys in her breakdown of part one.” “When you get to the end of part one, you’ll find that part one of the season is a cliffhanger, and part two of the season will be about the relationship between Joe and the killer he discovers,” Gamble told Glamour back in February.” So it will always be about what they have in common, and what Joe thinks they don’t have in common.”
Joe doesn’t think they really have anything in common. Because in reality, Joe is not being stalked by a working class egomaniac, but is actually in the midst of an intense psychotic episode …… Well, the other one. This time, though, Joe has completely lost his way, imagining himself the reluctant hero as his own Mr Hyde goes on a killing spree and keeps Marianne starving in the basement.
For a show that doesn’t usually rely on subterfuge to pack a meaningful punch, season four effectively delivers at least three shocking twists that fool even this seasoned TV viewer. Trust me, I don’t think I would have stuck around for season five if Marianne had actually died by suicide rather than conspiring with your own Nancy Drew.
Alas, Nadia (Amy-Leigh Hickman) is the latest pawn Joe has sent to prison, and with Marienne finally safe from his clutches, I eagerly await to see what havoc a rich as hell Joe Goldberg can wreak in New York City. Below, Gamble breaks down the season four finale of You and gives some hints as to what might happen in a potential season five.
